Kalėdos), one of the most prominent holidays in the Lithuanian folk calendar, has for a long time been observed with a mixture of Christian and pagan customs. By tradition, its celebration begins Christmas Eve (Dec. 24), a day called Kūčios in Lithuanian, marking the end of the Advent season, four weeks of quiet, penitent preparation for the birth of Christ. The oldest Indo-European languages still spoken today, they are remarkably similar in grammatical form to Sanskrit. With seven noun cases, five declension patterns there is absolutely no similarity to anything you have come across before, as well as the necessity to pronounce the stress of a word in the right place in order to be understood.
